Special Funding Options
There are two special funding options for students and graduates of the IACM program:
there is financial support of field research for master’s theses in the IACM program
- twice a year the IACM-program advertises a transition scholarship for the period between MA-degree and Ph.D.-studies
Application procedure for financial support of field research for master’s theses in the “International Administration and Conflict Management” M.A. program
1. Eligible Expenses
- Field research activities
- Visits to archives
2. Scope of Funding
Students may apply for financial support of up to 1,500 € for their M.A. thesis. The funds available per calendar year amount to 6,000 €. The ideal allocation would therefore support six students per year in the amount of 1,000 € each. As mentioned, in exceptional cases, up to 1,500 € may be requested.
3. Application Process
1st Step: Interview with the thesis advisor
After the development (or in the preparatory stages) of a synopsis for the M.A. thesis, the student should clarify in a conversation with his or her thesis advisor whether appropriate fieldwork or archival work could meaningfully contribute to the thesis. After an agreement in this regard has been reached, approval from one of the two program directors (Professor Seibel or Professor Holzinger) must be obtained. Their informal consent is sufficient and should be communicated to the IACM Coordinator.
2nd Step: Justification and statement of expenses
In order to apply for financial aid, the student must submit the synopsis of his or her M.A. thesis and a statement of estimated expenses for the requested funds to the IACM Coordinator. On the basis of these documents, the student will complete the application form together with the Coordinator, who will then send the form on.
3rd Step: Receipt of funds and accounting
A payment of 80% of the funds requested is generally transferred to the applicant within two to four weeks. After completion of the field research, the student then submits a list of expenses to the Coordinator. Subsequently, any outstanding expenses (within the framework of the original application amount) will be reimbursed.

Transition Scholarship between MA Degree and Ph.D. Studies
Character of the Scholarship
In order to allow a smooth transition for IACM-students from their MA degrees to possible Ph.D. studies, the IACM program advertises special scholarships twice a year. The scholarships run for six months and have a volume of 1,000 Euros per month. The idea behind those scholarships is to provide the prospective Ph.D. student with enough time to create a reasonable research design.
Application
Eligible for application are all IACM graduates. It is possible to apply up to one year after graduation.
Applications are due either until March 31st or September 30th of each year. However, the applicant must already have started with the writing of the MA thesis at the time of the application. After each deadline one of the two yearly scholarships is granted.
Application Documents
The following documents have to be part of the application:
- One page cover letter describing the current situation of the applicant;
- Transcript of Records, incl. all grades from the past MA studies;
- Letter of Recommendation by one of the professors associated with the IACM-program;
- A rough draft (max. 3 pages) describing the topic of the aspired Ph.D. project.
Award procedure
The selection is done by those heading the IACM program: the program directors, Prof. Katharina Holzinger and Prof. Wolfgang Seibel, as well as the IACM coordinator.
Decisions are made by consensus only.
Evaluation
After the end of the scholarship, the stipend is supposed to write a short report on his/her experiences of the last six months (1–3 pages).
