Intervention programs concerning masculinities, male subjectivity and the role of men in society began to receive researchers’, funding agencies’ and activists’ attention in the late 1990s (Morrell 2005). Today, South Africa, like many parts of Africa, has become a key site of masculinity politics, in other words, of mobilisations and engagement where masculinity is made a principal concern and men are subjected to change (van Klinken 2016). The workshop will reflect on the question of how masculinities are imagined, (re)made and performed through men’s engagement with these processes of politicization.

The first part of the workshop will be dedicated to the presentation and discussion of two ethnographic research projects. Lubabalo Mdedetyana who is currently working as a researcher at the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender will present the outcomes of his Master thesis in Anthropology. In his study he analyses the perception of traditionally circumcised men towards men who have undergone voluntary medical male circumcision. The PhD-research conducted by Franziska Duarte dos Santos focuses on (faith-based) initiatives that are attempting to change the social behaviour of men and notions of gender roles with the long-term goal of eradicating gender-based violence.

The second part of the workshop will be organised as a round-table discussion with short presentations by professionals working in the area of masculinity and gender-based violence.

The workshop will provide an opportunity for the dissemination and discussion of research findings to local stakeholders and academic partners. Furthermore, the event aims at creating interaction, synergy and exchange between academics and activists.

The workshop is funded by the University of Konstanz' Center of Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Social Integration" and is organised by Franziska Duarte dos Santos, PhD student at the Department for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Konstanz, in collaboration with the University of Pretoria's Department of Modern European Languages.
